For over 20 years, MercyMe has been a dominant voice in Christian music! Many of their songs - Greater, Here with Me, Word of God Speak, Lord I Lift your Name on High and dozens of others - have encouraged thousands of Christians throughout the world.
While the group has seen immense success over the years, their formation was birthed out of a huge loss vocalist Bart Millard faced during his college years. In his first semester, Millard’s father died of cancer. Hurt and struggling with the loss, Millard started to look for a change and a fresh start. His youth pastor invited him to work with the youth praise band. Millard says that marked "the first time I had ever done anything with a band - just a local youth group who played for a Wednesday night service. But I fell in love with it immediately."
Soon after Millard became friends with keyboardist Jim Bryson and guitarist Mike Scheuchzer, and in the summer of 1994, the three moved to Oklahoma City and formed MercyMe. Their concerts quickly grew to 200 dates per year and they soon added bassist Nathan Cochran and percussionist Robby Shaffer to the team. The group saw its first big break in 2001 with their Dove Award-winning single “I Can Only Imagine,” which made the Top 40 and eventually went platinum.
Today, MercyMe continues to inspire all of us through new music, such as Flawless and Dear Younger Me. We can’t wait for them to bring both their classics and new material to Break Forth Canada. Don’t miss their concert on the Saturday night… it’s definitely going to be one highlight of the weekend!
